Let's change our habits and do science differently !


The Research and Innovation unit of the Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development (MEDDE) invites both the general public and scientists to collaborate around a common theme : water sciences.

Within this framework, is launched the ANSWER[1] operation, carried out in partnership between the Ministry and the Scientific Interest Group for environment (GIS HED²).


An objective ...

Water is part of our daily life and environment. Everyday we observe its various behaviors that can be explained. The objective of the ANSWER operation is to analyse those phenomenons, illustrate them, and submit them to scientits that will help us to better understand and advance knowledge. This participative sciences operation invites us to collaborate in a playful and interactive way in order to both constitute a solid knowledge basis and improve our own ones.

Illustrate in a simple and comprehensible way the different physical phenomenons of water.

Gather in one space knowledge that often are scattered through several disciplines (hydrology, hydraulics, hydrogeology…)

Reproduce all those phenomenons through laboratory tests or in the nature.

Produce new knowledge about free surface flows dynamics.

Provide training products that will foster and facilitate knowledge.

Publish a book in augmented reality that gives access to further knowledge.

How to participate?

General public & Enthusiasts

Whether you are a student, a photographer, a videographer or even just a walker, your contribution will enrich this collaborative space. We invit you to collect field videos/pictures of physical phenomenons linked to water behavior. For instance, you can:

  • observe the behaviour of waves,
  • visualize flows closed to river structures,
  • highlight the evolutions of river bottoms after floods,
  • experiment on the field (nature) doing measurements,

or any event that seems relevant to you.

Pictures and short videos (one minute or two) will constitute precious testimonies that will arouse the interest and curiosity of the scientific community!

Each contribution, after selection, will be released on a WIKHYDRO page. The page's adress will be sent by mail to the contributor acknowledging receipt. Any data that presents a scientific interest will be submitted to researchers who will help us analyse and explain the phenomenons involved, thus producing further knowledge!


By participating,

  • you will collaborate to an innovative and international operation!
  • you will contribute to improve and spread knowledge,
  • you question scientists and inspire new researches,
  • you help the Ministry and his public institutions network to define new technical and scientific guidances,


your name will feature prominently in the produced documents.

Scientists& Experimenters

You are a scientist and you love challenging yourself and your peers? You are an ingenious experimenter passionate about water behavior studies? Various levels of participation are possible according to your abilities and wishies:

  • search for analytical solution based on equations from physics.
  • deal with complex cases submitted by the general public,
  • conduct physical tests in lab or nature, to reproduce in a didactic way those analytical solutions,
  • collect field videos or pictures to illustrate the various water behaviors in nature.


Why returning to analytical solutions?

Many reasons push us back to analytical solutions research, as old-fashioned as this might sound nowadays, time of advanced modelling tools. Those reasons are attached to the willingness of a better understanding of the physical phenomenons and a better use of the numerical models -that often make us forget about the mathematical bases of those tools. Furthermore, we would like to co-constitute a usefull knowlegde base for training.
We invit you, from the fundamentals of those simplified models, to gather available analytical solutions or define new ones that will allow the illustration of the tools behavior on simple cases.


Positioning of analytical solutions

For now, we confine ourselves to 4 disciplines : fluvial hydraulics, maritime hydraulics, hydrogeology and morphodynamics. The first contributions are available here
